SATURATED SITE CONDITIONS FORCE DELAY TO JUNE 11-12, 2010

Momentum is building rapidly for Timber & Biomass Expo Southeast, a live/static event where providers of forestry equipment, technology, supplies and services interact with customers and potential buyers. The show begins on Friday morning, June 11 and concludes the next day. It takes place on a Langdale-provided tract located a dozen or so miles east of Valdosta, Ga. and four miles south of the intersection of U.S. highway 84 and Georgia highway 135.

Reflecting the emergence of the wood-to-energy sector, which appears to be a major market in waiting for south Georgia and north Florida, the show includes a dedicated biomass arena where various makes and models of chippers and grinders will operate in a cluster clear of standing timber. The latest companies to take advantage of this arrangement include Fecon, Inc. and Precision Husky Corp. Vermeer Southeast, Bandit and Morbark earlier had committed to the dedicated biomass arena.

On another site, Rotochopper, CSI, Barko and Knight Forestry will collaborate to demonstrate a harvesting-grinding system to make finely textured material suitable for manufacturing fuel pellets.

In addition, Yancey Bros. will demonstrate a Peterson chipper and grinder on the dual sites it has secured in the designated logging equipment demo area.

As well, both Rayco and Dynamic (Cone-Head) are expected to statically display their grinding and chipping products while Peerless, Pitts, LMI and Big John will promote their biomass vans.

At least six wood-fired power plants, four pellet plants and one cellulosic ethanol plant have been announced in Georgia and Florida in the last three years. Some are operating, some are under construction and some are in the permitting stage. Combined, the annual wood fiber requirement of these plants could be multiple millions of tons within a few years.

This new market is emerging as the economy is improving and the established forest products industry is slowly getting more traction. At the same time, loggers are wearing out aging equipment as existing markets strengthen and new market opportunities germinate. All this could entice some new players and prompt established loggers to expand over time.

John Deere, Caterpillar and Tigercat will showcase new products and updated models. Attachment companies participating include CSI and Rotobec; log trailer manufacturers include Pitts, Big John and Magnolia. Maxi-Load will display its portable scales; Chambers Delimbinator its chain flail delimber. Tire companies include Primex/Alliance and GCR. Other exhibitors as of late February included Cleanfix Reversible Fans, Great American, Haglof, Hawkins & Rawlinson, Sedco, Peach State Trucks, Richie Brothers, Stihl, Guffin & Eleam, and Landmark Systems.

Information on available space and rates can be found by contacting Dianne Sullivan at 334-834-1170.

With roots going back to 1974, the show has always attracted between 2,000 and 3,000 from Georgia and surrounding states and despite the weak economy, a strong turnout is again expected.

In addition to observing the latest in equipment, technology, supplies and services, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the Cat Forest Products’ Prentice loader contest, which will be an extension of Yancey Bros.’ exhibit.

Those wishing to pre-register may do so on-line. Admission is $20 per person for adults 18 and over. Spouses and children under 18 must also register but will be admitted to the show at no charge.

The new location is now Lowndes County. Specifically, it’s a pine plantation situated 15 miles east of Valdosta, adjacent to state route 135 and four miles south of the Naylor community (U.S. 84).

The show was previously advertised as being held in Toombs County near Vidalia, Ga., but a communications breakdown among several parties nullified that arrangement. Show sponsor Hatton-Brown Publishers subsequently approached The Langdale Co. about hosting the event and its management stepped up with the new site. Headquartered in Valdosta, Langdale, a diversified timberland and forest products company with multiple other business interests, hosted the show one other time, in 1994. .

“We apologize to those exhibitors who have already selected sites, made lodging arrangements and so on and beg for their understanding as we move forward with this much-anticipated event,” said Hatton-Brown partner David (DK) Knight. “At the same time, we are very grateful to The Langdale Co. for agreeing to host the show by providing the site.”

Hatton-Brown publishes several magazines, among them Southern Loggin’ Times, Timber Harvesting and Wood Bioenergy. Knight and others at the company feel that as the economy improves, as the forest products industry gets traction, and as new wood-to-energy projects move ahead, many loggers are looking to replace aging equipment. “Blend in the fact that it’s been eight years since a large-scale logging equipment demo was held in south Georgia, and you’ve got a good environment for a beneficial event of this type.”

Hatton-Brown anticipates that upwards of 3,000 will attend the show, coming primarily from Georgia, Florida, Alabama and South Carolina. Admission is $20 per person, excluding spouses and children under 18.

Hatton-Brown Publishers has rescheduled its live forestry demo/show for April 16-17, 2010. It will be staged on timberland in Toombs County, Ga., near Vidalia. The name of the event has been altered to Timber & Biomass Expo Southeast to reflect the growing importance of the developing wood biomass sector, which is poised to grow quickly in Georgia and surrounding states in coming months and years.

“The delay of the show should work out better for all parties concerned,” says DK Knight, a principal in Hatton-Brown, which publishes Southern Loggin’ Times, Timber Harvesting and Wood Bioenergy magazines, among others. “The economy and forest industry should be in recovery mode by then and even more wood-to-energy plants are expected to be in the works—some perhaps operational. And we’re confident the site we’ll settle on will make for a more efficient layout. Another plus is that the site will be within 20 miles of Vidalia and Lyons, which have ample high quality lodging.”

Site selection information is expected to be available by late July.
