SATURATED SITE CONDITIONS FORCE DELAY TO JUNE 11-12, 2010

Momentum is building rapidly for Timber & Biomass Expo Southeast, a live/static event where providers of forestry equipment, technology, supplies and services interact with customers and potential buyers. The show begins on Friday morning, June 11 and concludes the next day. It takes place on a Langdale-provided tract located a dozen or so miles east of Valdosta, Ga. and four miles south of the intersection of U.S. highway 84 and Georgia highway 135.

Reflecting the emergence of the wood-to-energy sector, which appears to be a major market in waiting for south Georgia and north Florida, the show includes a dedicated biomass arena where various makes and models of chippers and grinders will operate in a cluster clear of standing timber. The latest companies to take advantage of this arrangement include Fecon, Inc. and Precision Husky Corp. Vermeer Southeast, Bandit and Morbark earlier had committed to the dedicated biomass arena.

In addition, Yancey Bros. will demonstrate a Peterson chipper and grinder on the dual sites it has secured in the designated logging equipment demo area.

As well, both Rayco and Dynamic (Cone-Head) are expected to statically display their grinding and chipping products while Peerless, Pitts, ITI, Pinnacle and Big John will promote their biomass vans.

At least six wood-fired power plants, four pellet plants and one cellulosic ethanol plant have been announced in Georgia and Florida in the last three years. Some are operating, some are under construction and some are in the permitting stage. Combined, the annual wood fiber requirement of these plants could be multiple millions of tons within a few years.

This new market is emerging as the economy is improving and the established forest products industry is slowly getting more traction. At the same time, loggers are wearing out aging equipment as existing markets strengthen and new market opportunities germinate. All this could entice some new players and prompt established loggers to expand over time.

Attachment companies participating include CSI and Rotobec; log trailer manufacturers include Pitts, Big John and Magnolia. Maxi-Load will display its portable scales; Chambers Delimbinator its chain flail delimber. Tire companies include Primex/Alliance and GCR. Other exhibitors as of late February included Cleanfix Reversible Fans, Great American, Haglof, Hawkins & Rawlinson, Sedco, Peach State Trucks, Richie Brothers, Stihl, Guffin & Eleam, and Landmark Systems.

Information on available space and rates can be found by contacting Dianne Sullivan at 334-834-1170.

With roots going back to 1974, the show has always attracted between 2,000 and 3,000 from Georgia and surrounding states and despite the weak economy, a strong turnout is again expected.

In addition to observing the latest in equipment, technology, supplies and services, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the Cat Forest Products’ Prentice loader contest, which will be an extension of Yancey Bros.’ exhibit.

Those wishing to pre-register may do so on-line. Admission is $20 per person for adults 18 and over. Spouses and children under 18 must also register but will be admitted to the show at no charge.
